Katakolon Port

Katakolon is a small port in Pyrgos, the capital of Elia in the Southern Peloponesse.
Despite it’s size, it is a very important port, founded for the current trade in 1857. The waterfront port is lined with small shops and a number of excellent taverna’s specializing in seafood. Katakolon is the most popular base for travelers seeking to visit Ancient Olympia-a complex of temples, priests\' dwellings and public buildings.
It was also the venue where the Olympic idea was born back in Mycenaean times. The first official quadrennial Olympic Games were played here in 776 BC, and lasted five days.
The athletic festival included wrestling, chariot and horse racing, the pentathlon (wrestling, discus javelin throwing, long jump and running).
