Nafplion

Nafplion is located on the eastern side of the Peloponesse, 150 kms from Athens and 71 kms from Corinth Canal.
It is named after the great ancient Greek voyager Nafplios, the son of Poseidon and Amymone who founded the city who’s son Palamidis took part in the Trojan war.
Nafplion has a long and interesting history that goes back to the Mycenean years. Because of its strategic location which controls the argolic gulf, it has been conquered by different nations which left their signs on the city’s architecture and gave it a special character.
The two most important landmarks of Nafplion, are the island fortress called Bourtzi and the castle of Palamidi which overlooks the city. Palamidi was recovered from the Ottomans by the warriors of the Greek revolution in 1822 and one year later Nafplion was declared the first capital of the Greek nation which was still fighting for independence. Some of the most historical buildings of the city are the first parliament, the first Greek high school and the cathedral church of St. George where the first governor of Greece, Ioannis Capodistrias put an oath in 1828.
A big variety of hotels, cafeterias and restaurants that offer their services and cater for all tastes are available in Nafplio.
Within less than an hour’s drive from the city visitors can find the ancient theatre of Epidavros, a unique construction with exceptional acoustics where theatrical groups still perform throughout the summer months and also the ancient city of Mycenae which was the center of one of the most important and powerful civilizations which ever existed in Greece
