The Caribbean

Our suggested yacht for this area: Jamaica Bay   Douce France

The Caribbean is one of the most varied and attractive sailing areas in the world. Unusually, for such a small area, the Caribbean islands represent many nations and have such a wide variety of languages, cultures and topography, it is like a vast geography lesson learnt in the most congenial circumstances.

The sea is perfect for sailing, the coastlines varied and interesting with wonderful golden beaches under swaying palm trees, crystal clear water leads the way to explore spectacular coral and exotic marine life and the ubiquitous steel bands irrepressible beat. Sailing from island to island, music and dancing follows in your wake.

The Virgin Islands, England and the United States are represented in this archipelago of some one hundred islands to the east of Puerto Rico, a cruising paradise, stretching over 50km in one direction and 25km in the other. Sailing time between ports of call is rarely more than two hours.
Visit Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island, Norman Island, and swim at Virgin Corda or Caneel Bay on Saint John's Island. Saint Martin, uniquely, is both Dutch and French, having been divided between the two counties long ago.
A distinct flavour on each side of the divide stemming from these allegiances, marks the perfect starting point for a cruise in the north of the Leeward Islands.

The island is famous for superb landscapes, the finest beaches in the Caribbean, bright cosmopolitan nightlife and duty free stores. Anguilla, to the north, is a peaceful island famous for its impressive coral reefs; south-east is the superb island of Saint Bart's., a delightful blend of French finesse and Caribbean beauty.

Guadeloupe, a favourite international holiday spot famous the world over. No visitor could ever resist the charm of this French island, with steep mountains towering above idyllic beaches. In the south, the smaller Marie Galante and Les Saintes shine like jewels in a setting of untouched natural beauty. Beyond is the independent state of Dominica where majestic mountains cloaked in tropical flora will captivate and fascinate visitors.

Martinique the largest of the Windward Islands, is the perfect starting point for a voyage of discovery sailing around these magnificent tropical islands and rugged volcanic shapes. The blend of French and Creole style, the lively community, busy restaurants and boutiques are all part of the charm of Martinique. Admire the spectacular diamond rock, then choose a bay at Anse Mitan to moor for the night, sheltered from the rolling swell.
No cruise would be complete without tacking south to visit St. Lucia. The untouched natural beauty, steep slopes with luxuriant tropical flora and the sheer splendour of the Piton mountains are definitely worth a special expedition, and of course nothing is more than a few hours away, when under sail and crossing the deep blue sea.

As grand as their legend, the Grenadines, or the windward islands as they are also known, are a total of 125 islands extending over 64 kilometres, adorning one of the most beautiful expanses of water for cruising. Sheer paradise for eisure sailing and diving, with steady trade-winds, it conceals a host of deserted coves and tiny islands. St. Johns at the North of the chain, the remote and whimsical Bequia and other islands, such as Mustique, popular for its celebrity visitors, which endow the island with cosmopolitan appeal.
