Red Sea

The Sudan situated on the Red Sea opposite Saudi Arabia between Egypt and Ethiopia, is a fabulous country with amazing diving among the coral reefs. The "virgin" sea bottom of Port Sudan is considered to be the best with its "marsa", the Sudanese fjords. There are also fantastic opportunities ashore to see indigenous animals in their natural habitat, quite unafraid, as their contact with man has been minimal and they have not learned to see him as a threat.

It is a wonderful and exciting holiday destination for both summer and winter period. Excellent diving is also to be had embarking at Hurghada in Egypt. Combined with a visit to the "Valley of the Kings", take a chance of living the eastern-islam culture and the exoticism these African countries offer you, and still not far from Europe.

Hurghada is considered the dive capital of the Red Sea. Places that could be explored include, Sha'ab Abu Ramada and Erg Camel. Nicknamed "The Aquarium" thanks to its large schools of fish. Little Giften is the best spot in the region to anchor overnight. There is a reef wall where soft corals predominate. Take off for Careless Reef where an community of moray eels may await the intrepid diver. Umm Qamar a solitary little island whose Arabic name means "Moon" offers a good chance of sighting sharks, mantas and eagle rays. Sha'ab Umm Usk an elliptical lagoon where dolphins frolic. Bluff Point a local beauty spot with large sea turtles, a colony of lionfish and a sand cafe.

Sharm El Sheikh where the reef table extends downward either as sheer slope or as a full-fledged wall. At Ras Mohammed the wall is 80m! Na'ama Bay is the diving capital of this region. Woodhouse Reef has many sand caves and many tube sponges though the smaller Thomas Reef has some of the rare Black Coral. At Jackson Reef you can fin sea turtles, eagle rays, garden eels, stingrays and enormous grouper. Shark Bay has a long canyon, which slopes away from the desert. From its name it is fairly obvious that one would expect to see shark here but also one might see mantas.
The Gardens feature many large and small reefs. Its vibrant and luxuriant landscape makes for perfect viewing of the coral inhabitants. At Sha'ab Mahmud you'll find numerous dive sights.

Water temperatures in the Red Sea remain at an average of 22 C for most of the year. Maximum summer temperatures are lower in the south while minimum temperatures are higher in the north with the opposite occurring during the winter. The coldest month of the year is January and the armest months are July and August.
