Known as a major clultural center in ancient Greece, the isle of Lesvos was the birthplace of the lyric poet Sapho, the philosopher Theophrastus and Terpander,”the father of Greek music”,as well as Nobel Prize-winning poet Odysseus Elytis.Aristotle and Epicurus taught at the Philosophical Academy.Today, the island(also known as Lesbos,Mitilini or Mytilini) is known for its stark natural beauty, its archaeological museums and for producing arguably the best ouzo in Greece.

The discovery of prehistoric flora and fauna on the island proves it existed at least two million years ago.Mastodon tusks, fossilized remains of a giant tortoise the size of a small car and a group of giant apes of the Paradolichopithecus family, the oldest found in Europe, are among the intriguing discoveries unearthed here. There was an exceptionally advanced civilization here as early as the Bronze Age.Pelasgians,Aecheans and Aeolians each ruled in turn from around 1500 BC to 1000 BC.Persians lost out to Athenians;the Peloponnesian War found most of the residents on the wrong side in the struggle with Athens, for which they paid dearly.Eventually Macedonians,Romans,Byzantines and Turks rule, often with punishing results.Over the centuries,a number of devastating earth quakes also left indelible marks.Modern times found the island reclaimed by Greece in 1923;the island was occupied by the Germans during World War II from May of 1941 untill September of 1944.
